Imagine if Carol Burnett met Jeff Dunham on Avenue Q.
That’s
The Allison Wonders Show—nostalgic, offbeat, and wonderfully inappropriate! In her hilarious one-woman adult show, Allison serves up ventriloquism and sketch comedy with a variety of puppets and characters on the fringe, tackling everything from puppet identity crises to the voices in our heads.  In a world gone wonky, shared laughter is still the best medicine— and this show is the ultimate prescription!

                        The Story Behind My Show

In 1985, I sat mesmerized in the Fox Theatre in Atlanta watching Lily Tomlin perform her brilliant one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. I knew, right then at 31 years old, that I wanted to do a one-woman show of my own. Then life happened—marriage, kids—and that dream got tucked away.

Fast forward to 2002. I watched Eve Ensler perform The Vagina Monologues on HBO, then saw it live, and something cracked open in me. The idea that ONE WOMAN, sitting on a stool with no costumes, could captivate an audience? Spellbinding. That show reignited everything. For the next ten years, I walked around saying to myself—and to anyone who asked about my dreams—“I want to do a one-woman show.”

Tick tock. Tick tock. Suddenly I was at the edge of turning 50, and I declared: I’m doing it. I set a date on my 50th Birthday—May 19, 2014—invited my friends and family, and got to work. I pulled out every note I had scribbled over the years and started shaping my show.

Two months before opening night, I performed a draft for my then “wasband” (rhymes with husband)… and let’s just say it was a thumbs-down review. Luckily, I’m great under pressure. I went back in and rebuilt the show. And on my 50th birthday, I performed Allison Wonders and Her Cast of Characters for 50 of my loved ones. A show filled with quirky vignettes and zany characters—including a hippie doing jokes between “Laugh-In”–style bits.

I was hooked.  I performed the show two more times, but something was still missing. I wanted a deeper connection with the audience. So I took three stand-up comedy classes. I learned how to write jokes—but more importantly, during my third class show, I brought out my puppet Blue. I had performed with puppets before on my children’s television show called Ladida’s Room, but this time was different. When I came off stage, the ventriloquist goddess whispered what people had been telling me my whole life:   “Allison… shut your mouth.”   So I did. And that’s when I learned how to be a ventriloquist.

On May 19, 2021—back when we were all still six feet apart—I performed my current show, The Allison Wonders Show, outdoors to a circle of friends. And I haven’t stopped since. Living rooms, backyards, events, comedy clubs across the country—San Diego, Ohio, St. George, Utah—you name it. I figured out how to pack up my show and take it wherever I go.

I’m 61, and I plan on performing this show (or some evolving version of it) for the long run. My personal goal? Perform it 100 times. I’m at 30 and counting.  We’re living through some wild and heavy times. If I can lighten the load—even a little—by bringing laughter, I’m all in.
